Fisher’s Landing’s Math and Reading Club is a Fisher’s Landing Tutor Program created two years after Fisher’s Landing opened for the purpose of providing academic support to students, who would benefit from additional instruction, during the school day.
The program provides timely and targeted instruction in reading and/or math for students who are identified by teacher teams, based on each grade level’s current learning expectations and student learning data.
Fisher’s Landing’s annual auction, sponsored and organized by Fisher’s Landing’s PTO fully funds the program. With the funds, we are able to hire tutors who work closely with teachers and provide targeted instruction during the school day for students.
When the program began, students received this additional instruction during their classroom instruction time. This presented a challenge, given all students need to receive classroom instruction; but also, at times be beneficiary of additional small group instruction directly related to the learning goals in the classroom. For the past few years the additional instruction has taken place during recess time and a small amount of classroom time. When a student attends Math Club or Reading Club, he/she will miss one recess or part of one recess each day during the tutoring cycle. Each tutoring cycle lasts approximately 2 weeks in length, depending on the academic focus and the learning progress of the student.
There is a process that has been designed to determine which students will attend Math Club and/or Reading Club and the specific, measurable learning targets for each tutor cycle by grade level.
